The United Kingdom is supposed to be a democracy
But there is something not quite right going on....
Here is a picture of our head of state, King Charles III, the man who represents the moral conscience of the nation
In addition to his rather limited constitutional role his job is to represent the nation and its citizens to the world
His image is on our currency and postal stamps
Have a look at the above picture
This guy is the monarch, the head of state of a liberal democracy but there is something wrong....
His military uniform!
What type of shitty banana republic has the head of state prancing around, dressed up in a military uniform?
It's not even a practical uniform made for combat, it is a costume, a means of dressing up for an occasion
He should dress like the people he represents - dressing like that sends the message that he is not a representative of the civilian public, but is instead on the side of the militarists
In a democracy the head of state should be a CIVILIAN and should dress as a civilian - a suit and tie would suffice and be way more appropriate given that we are a democracy and the military serves the nation, not the other way round!
Militarism is trashy and obnoxious and rather frightening too I think
It's also a tad ridiculous too I think - look at his medals! I bet he didn't get those for single-handedly taking out an enemy machine gun nest, or carrying a wounded comrade back to friendly lines...
When I see my head of state dressed in full military I am reminded of the age old Sex Pistols lyrics "God Save The Queen! The Fascist Regime!"
He looks a bit like something out of Star Wars, but not the light side
In a democracy the head of state should be a civilian - having our head of state dressed up as he does blows an enormous hole in any pretence that the head of state is a civilian
And in a democracy, the civilian population is in charge. Not the military.
It's an example of full-blown militarism, a relic from the colonial era, a vestige of imperialism
The King is head of the armed forces and there is nothing wrong with that
Except that in a democracy the troops should ultimately be commanded by people in suits
So, my message to King Charles:
Put your uniforms away and start wearing a suit! You are the head of state of a democracy, not the Generalissimo of some tinpot banana republic!
I think that it makes us look bad, as a nation
It's distasteful and it doesn't suit him, he looks much more regal in a nice suit
When he dresses up in his uniforms he looks a tad ridiculous to normal people and civilians - who in a democracy are supposed to be in charge
The King should dress up like how the people in charge dress up!
He should therefore wear civilian clothes!
Dressing up like some field marshal undermines our democracy and belittles our standing in the world
So, King Charles, if you are reading this - I think you should stop dressing up in military uniforms. The civilians are supposed to be in charge, not the military.
In short: I think you should stop dressing as a dictator
